Minority Teacher Recruitment Center

At Western Kentucky University, the Minority Teacher Recruitment Center (MTRC) is committed to creating racially and culturally heterogeneous school districts by increasing the number of minority teachers in Kentucky classrooms. The MTRC is dedicated to assisting minority students who are pursuing teacher education as a major and is a cooperative effort bringing together the resources of the Kentucky Department of Education and area school districts. The Coordinator of the Minority Teacher Recruitment Center encourages all interested persons to explore the possibilities of the various programs.

There are several opportunities offered through the MTRC, which is housed in the Office of Teacher Services. The Minority Educator Recruitment and Retention Scholarship program is available to full-time students from Kentucky with a 2.75 cumulative GPA or better pursing initial certification at Western Kentucky University. Along with scholarship opportunities, the center provides workshops for students such as PPST (Praxis I) and Praxis II prep, résumé writing and interview skills and professional development. The office also serves as a support center for minority education students at WKU.

The MTRC also plans campus visits and recruits middle and high school students who have shown an interest in teacher education.
