Scholarship Opportunities for Theatre & Dance Majors
College is expensive, no doubt about it. Here are some scholarship opportunities for incoming and current Theatre & Dance majors that might help ease the pain.
The NEW Potter College Creative Arts Scholarship!
Potter College of Arts & Letters is offering a new Potter College Creative Arts Scholarship for incoming students planning to major in Dance, Theatre, Performing Arts, Music, Art, Creative Writing, and Film. This is a competitive award and requires a separate application from the general WKU application for admission or scholarships. For more information, visit
Visit our Creative Arts Scholarship Audition and Interview page for more information about how audition or interview for a scholarship to major in Theatre, Dance, Musical Theatre, or Performing Arts.
Governor's School for the Arts Targeted Awards
The scholarship program for incoming students who have attended the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts was revised in 2015/2016. Every entering GSA alumnus with a high school GPA of 3.0+ is now eligible for a GSA Targeted Award of $1500 each year, no matter what major they choose at WKU. To be eligible, students must have a complete application package on file with WKU by January 15th. A complete application package means the student has applied and been admitted to WKU by January 15th. An official high school transcript must also be on file with WKU by January 15th. This award can be stacked on top of the new Potter College Creative Arts Scholarship mentioned above, or the Cherry Presidential Scholarship and Academic Merit Awards mentioned below. Terms for renewal of the GSA Targeted Award include full-time status, good academic standing and a cumulative WKU GPA of 3.0+.
There will be no change for WKU students currently on GSA scholarships. Terms for renewal of current GSA scholarships include full-time status, good academic standing (a cumulative GPA of 3.0+), and maintaining a major in one of the following departments: Theatre & Dance, Music, Art, English, or Journalism and Broadcasting. Awards are applied to the cost of in-state tuition.
Academic and Transfer Scholarships
Incoming freshmen should also apply for an Academic Merit Award or the Cherry Presidential Scholarship. Transfer students should apply for a Transfer Base and/or Transfer Targeted Awards. These can be stacked on top of the GSA Target Award and Potter College Creative Arts Scholarship mentioned above, up to the cost of attendance. Check our the WKU Scholarships page for a comprehensive list of scholarships and policies.
Theatre & Dance Department Scholarships
At the departmental level, we administer 13 merit-based scholarships funds. In most years we award about 20 to 25 individual scholarships, ranging in size from $150 to $1000. These typically go to students who have been in the program at least one year. Students apply in February and the department faculty select the recipients in March. Rather than apply for any specific scholarships listed below, students make a general application for support. The department faculty then choose the appropriate fund for each student selected. See the application for further details.
