The Western Kentucky University Writing Project

Twenty-seventh WKU Writing Project

June 4 - June 29, 2012

Western Kentucky University, in cooperation with the Kentucky Department of Education and the National Writing Project, will offer its Twenty-seventh Summer Invitational Institute for K-12 teachers. Our project is a cooperative in-service effort aimed at improving writing instruction at all levels. For each participant the project will provide up to six hours of graduate credit in English (at no cost to participants) and a stipend of $300 to offset travel-related expenses. Our project will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, for four weeks.

A maximum of twenty teachers of social studies, science, English/language arts, and other disciplines (K-12), distributed across grade levels, will be selected. Each applicant should have successful teaching experience, and experienced teachers will be given first consideration. Each applicant also needs a strong recommendation from his/her principal showing potential for influencing students and other teachers, as well as leadership qualities and professional commitment.

Our intensive project emphasizes writing as a process. Teachers will write a variety of assignments, discuss recent theories and research in the teaching of writing, prepare instructional materials, and share their own successful strategies for teaching composition. Outside speakers and social events will add interest to the program.

In the fall of 2012, participants will share their expertise with their colleagues through in-service programs and will spend time consulting with other teachers in their schools. Two Saturday meetings with participants and University faculty will be conducted in each semester of the academic year 2012-2013. In addition, each participant will be engaged in a standards-based unit of instruction project.

Please contact the Project Director for additional information: Peggy Otto. Phone: (270) 745-30450 or (270) 745-6587. E-mail: peggy.otto@wku.edu. Please note that only twenty participants will be chosen, so mail your application as early as possible.
