Athletics Minority Fellowship Program for Undergraduates
WKU Athletics seeks to offer four undergraduate scholarships in the 2021-22 school
year for students interested in careers focusing on Athletic Administration. The WKU Athletics Minority Fellowship program will be dedicated to enhancing the success of students of color – excluding
student-athletes on athletic scholarship – within the athletic department’s administrative
areas.This scholarship is specifically geared toward undergraduates with FEWER than 90 collegiate credit hours.
Minority Teacher Recruitment Program
At Western Kentucky University, the Minority Teacher Recruitment Program (MTRP) is committed to increasing the number of minority teachers in Kentucky classrooms through recruitment and retention efforts. The MTRP is dedicated to assisting students who are pursuing teacher education as a major, and collaborates with the Kentucky Department of Education and area school districts in bringing resources together.
Distinguished Minority Fellows
The Distinguished Minority Fellows program is designed to help minority students attain graduate degrees by providing tuition as well as employment opportunities. Admission into the program is competitive and applicants are encouraged to submit the application materials as early as possible. Applications are accepted once annually in the Spring for admission for the following fall semester.
Other Help Resources
The Intercultural Student Engagement Center (I.S.E.C.) promotes a culturally inclusive campus environment, cultural awareness and competence, inter-group dialogue, engagement and intercultural interaction, and supports lifelong learning about self and others. The office serves as a hands-on recruitment and retention resource for the many cultural, religious/spiritual, and identity groups reflected within the WKU community. The center provides student support services to foster academic success and sponsors culturally based celebratory events. Staff within I.S.E.C. carry out programmatic initiatives designed to increase the cultural competency of students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, center staff manages respectful spaces for students to learn about themselves and others through meaningful experiences, dialogues, and opportunities for growth. The ISEC Academy and the WKU Pride Center are both part of the Intercultural Student Engagement Center.
The Counseling Center offers Safe Zone training to help train faculty and staff about concerns of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Intersex (LGBTQI) persons on campus and the community at large. The training focuses upon how our staff and faculty can become allies to LGBTQI students.
The purpose of the Student Accessibility Resource Center (SARC) is to coordinate services and accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Their most common responsibilities include reviewing disability documentation, meeting with students to determine appropriate accommodations, and partnering with other areas on campus to implement these accommodations.
SARC strives to help students assume responsibility of their own educational experience. SARC assists students along the way by providing access and opportunity in order for them to reach their full potential.
TRIO is a set of federally-funded college opportunity programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree. Over 850,000 low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities — from sixth grade through college graduation — are served by more than 2,800 programs nationally. TRIO programs provide academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance, and other supports necessary for educational access and retention. TRIO programs provide direct support services for students, and relevant training for directors and staff.
