This film is a personal exploration that will tell a richly archival, thought-provoking story that gives voice to the insights and experiences of Beulah Mae Mitchell, the aunt of the Los Angeles-based filmmaker, who spent 45-years working at Mattel.
Upon Mattel’s 1980 release of Black Barbie, the film turns to the intergenerational impact the doll had. Discussing how the absence of black images in the “social mirror” left Black girls with little other than White subjects for self-reflection and self-projection. Beulah Mae Mitchell and other Black women in the film talk about their own, complex, varied experience of not seeing themselves represented, and how Black Barbie’s transformative arrival affected them personally.

The WKU Math Club exists to provide a social outlet for math lovers, likers, and non-haters. In the past we’ve organized game nights, trivia contests, movie nights, origami folding sessions, and other fun activities that are related (at least tangentially) to mathematics.
But we want the club to be whatever YOU want it to be!! If you are interested in being a part of a newly revitalized WKU Math Club, please join us for an organizational, brainstorming, and planning meeting on Wednesday, November 8 at 5:00 p.m. in COHH 4123. We will have FREE PIZZA and other snacks.

Panel discussion with WKU historians Dr. David Lee, University Historian; Dr. Kate Brown, Associate Professor, History; Dr. Jennifer Hanley, Associate Professor History; and Dr. Marko Dumančić, Director, Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning. The past has always been subject to interpretation discussion and reinterpretation. However, for many, history was often presented to students as a singular agreed upon narrative. Today, most historians agree that history should be studied from a multi-perspective approach. Join panelists in an exploration of how history has been, is currently, and might be, taught in the future.

Have you ever wondered what some of the benefits are to studying mathematics at WKU? Are you unsure of what to do after graduation? A great resource for answers to these questions are the people who have been in your shoes before! In the monthly Pi Mu Epsilon Math Alumni Speaker Series (PME MASS), WKU Mathematics alumni speak about their career paths and how studying mathematics at WKU has been beneficial to them. Each event ends with a Q&A session.
We are pleased to announce this month’s speaker, Jennifer Chapman, the Associate Director of Technology Solutions at Humana Inc. Jennifer will be speaking to us via Zoom from Louisville on Tuesday, November 28, at 4:00 PM. You have the option of joining us in person (in COHH 2117, where light refreshments will be served) or via Zoom (https://wku.zoom.us/j/94432958915). We are having everyone bring safe snacks and a Christmas movie night. It will be super laidback and fun. We would like everyone to rsvp if possible so we can get a headcount.
