How It Works

November 2012 – February 2013

Open nationwide recruitment for GSKyTeach teacher residents

March 1, 2013

Deadline for GSKyTeach application submissions

April 2, 2013

Candidate selection completed and all applicants are notified.

June 3, 2013


GSKyTeach teacher residents are employed by Western Kentucky University.

June 3 – July 12, 2013


GSKyTeach orientation, initial graduate course instruction, and preparation to teach on the Bowling Green, KY campus of Western Kentucky University. Lodging is provided during the summer residency program at WKU.

August 2013

Teacher residents report for orientation to Jefferson County public schools (JCPS)

September 2013 – May 2014

Teacher residents participate in the GSKyTeach program:

• Progressive teaching and professional development experiences in high-need high schools and the JCPS school community, four days per week

• Graduate studies and learning with cohort members, one day per week.

May 2014

Teacher residents:

• Complete school residency requirement.

• Complete graduate course work.

• Receive Master of Arts in Education degree.

• Receive temporary teacher certification to complete 1st year of teaching and the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program.

June 2014

Employment as teacher residents at WKU ends.

June 2014

Teacher residents receive school assignments as full-time teachers.

August 2014

New teachers are employed by JCPS.

September 2014 – May 2015

• New teachers complete Kentucky Teachers Internship Program.

• JCPS Mentor and Master Teachers, school principals, and GSKyTeach faculty mentors guide GSKyTeach graduates through their first official year of teaching.

September 2015 – May 2016

New teachers continue to be mentored by JCPS Mentor and Master teachers, their school principals, and GSKyTeach faculty.

September 2016 – May 2017

New teachers complete their third year of teaching in high-need schools and fulfill their commitment to the GSKyTeach program and JCPS.
