She received a BS in Nursing from the University of Virginia in 1990, an MS in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 2001 and a PhD in Nursing History from the University of Virginia in 2008 for her research on “Nurse-Midwifery and the Society of Catholic Medical Missionaries in Santa Fe, New Mexico” which examined the maternity care of Spanish American Women between 1943 and 1969. She holds a Certificate in Nurse-Midwifery from FNU.

She’s practiced nursing in Virginia in a variety of settings before joining the Nursing faculty of Shenandoah University in 2004.  In 2009 she became Course Coordinator at the Frontier Nursing University before being promoted to Associate Dean in 2014.

She’s the author of two books on the history of the Frontier Nursing Service.  The first Rooted in the Mountains. Reaching to the World: Stories of Nursing and Midwifery at Kentucky’s Frontier School, 1939-1969 was published by Butler Books in 2012 and the second Unbridled Service. Growing Up and Giving Back as a Frontier Nursing Service Courier, 1928-2010 was published in 2014 and  was one of the finalists for the 2015 Kentucky Literary Award. 

She’s the recipient of numerous awards for her teaching and research as well as many grants and fellowships.  She’s a very popular speaker and this month is the Keynote Speaker and Randolph Award recipient at the International Nursing History Conference in Charlottesville, Virginia.

She’ll be talking about “Answering the Call: Nurses, Couriers and the Frontier Nursing Service” on Thursday March 17 at 7 p.m. at Barnes & Noble and signing copies of her newest book.
