Description:

Based on the diaries of early 20thcentury explorers, Embrace of the Serpent melds various tales and perspectives of the Columbian Amazon to create a multi-faceted and unique portrait of the region. As he comes to terms with life as the only surviving member of his tribe, shaman Karamakate befriends a German and American scientist decades apart and reluctantly agrees to serve as a guide through the perils of the Amazon as they search for an elusive medicinal plant. Through their encounters with crazed missionaries, natural dangers, and Columbian soldiers, director Ciro Guerra interrogates postcolonial politics and national identity on a narrative scale that critics have compared to the classic film Apocalypse Now. Screening at the Cannes Film Festival and nominated for an Academy Award, the film earned universal critical praise and has spawned a renewed international interest in Columbian cinema.
