About Potter College

Since Western Kentucky University opened its doors in 1906, the liberal arts have been at the heart of the school’s mission. With outstanding programs in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, that is as true today as it was more than a century ago.

Potter College of Arts & Letters (PCAL) prepares students to enter a wide range of careers and programs of advanced study through its 12 academic departments, 35 majors, 36 minors, 11 certificate programs, and 5 graduate programs. As advocates of the liberal arts, Potter College believes that understanding history, society and culture helps students better understand and succeed in the world, and takes as its primary area of scholarly concern the study of men and women—their past, present, and future as well as their aesthetic expression, metaphysical concerns, and social interaction.

In the 21st century, our world is dramatically changing economically, technologically, globally, cross-culturally, environmentally, socially, and politically. Accordingly, employers recognize the value of a liberal education for college graduates and the citizens of today and tomorrow. They desire transferable skills — skills employees take with them to any job, such as written and verbal communication skills, an ability to solve complex problems, work well with others, and adapt in a changing workplace. With a solid liberal arts education, graduates are not limited to a particular position, but flexible and qualified for a wide range of opportunities.

At WKU, Potter College develops students’ intellectual capacities and practical skills by providing broad knowledge to prepare them for a variety of jobs and a lifetime of learning and growth. Potter College programs enable students to succeed in a workforce that requires bright team players and global thinkers who are inquisitive, analytical and creative with excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills. Our classes provide students personal attention and plenty of opportunities to engage in activities and projects with real-world applications. Excellence in teaching and learning is our highest priority. Students will find a diverse and world class faculty and caring staff who take a personal interest in helping students achieve their goals.
