This semester the Department of Political Science will be highlighting the accomplishments of many of our students. The first student featured is Derek Collins, a junior Political Science major from Hattiesburg High School in Mississippi. Derek competes on the WKU Forensics Team and is a three-time AFA national champion in the Communication Analysis and Informative Speaking events. He also serves as an Associate Justice in the Student Government Association and is the Political Science representative on the Potter College of Arts and Letters Dean's Council.

In the summer of 2019, Derek studied at the University of Bristol after being selected to participate in the Fulbright Summer Institute in the United Kingdom. On his experience, he said it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. “I immersed myself in a completely different culture from what I was accustomed to. It wasn't just the beautiful sights and scenery that captivated me. The knowledge I gained from attending workshops and conferences with representatives from the University of Bristol was priceless.”

One of the things he likes most about majoring in Political Science is the quality of the instructors and the consistent dedication they put towards their students and teaching. Through them, he has been able to learn how politics shapes our society. Upon graduation, he is planning on attending law school.
