Data & Reports

WKU is a leader in the Commonwealth of Kentucky in education abroad.  Each year since the 2006-2007 academic year, WKU has appeared in the national rankings in the IIE Open Doors Report as a top-sending master’s institution for study abroad participation.  On average, around 500 WKU students study abroad annually on various types of credit-bearing international experiences.  Approximately 10% of WKU students graduate with study abroad experience.

In 2018, WKU was the recipient of an Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education (EDIIE) award.  Named the Diversity & Inclusion Champion, WKU received recognition for diversifying the students who participate in education abroad experiences.  Through initiatives such as the Enhancing Diversity in Global Education (EDGE) Grant and targeted outreach to diverse student groups, we have succeeded in improving access and increasing participation rates of underrepresented students in education abroad over the past few years.

Our study abroad participation rates are a testament to our institutional investment in education abroad in a number of ways, including developing a variety of faculty-led programs that allow students to engage in active learning in global contexts; establishing international partnerships to expand opportunities for students; and offering a variety of scholarships and other funding resources to make study abroad experience accessible to students from a wide range of backgrounds.  If you are interested in making a gift to support education abroad at WKU, click here.
