The Frog Prince
By David Mamet

Directed by Lena Buechler

(Note:  those individuals involved in Comedy of Errors will not be eligible.)

The Frog Prince is a smart take on the classic Grimm's fairy tale.  A prince, engaged to be married, goes out into a field with his servingman to pick flowers for his bride.  Unfortunately for the prince, however, the field is owned by a strange old sorceress. She turns him into a frog for his lack of consideration for others and the fault of not turning the flowers back over to her.  The spell can only be lifted when, "a pure and honest woman of her own free will shall plant a selfless kiss upon [his] lips."  The frog, with his loyal servingman's assistance, makes his home in the forest and begins to woo a kind-hearted and down to earth milkmaid.  Finally, he receives his kiss and returns to human form, but under bittersweet circumstances.  The Prince has lost his royal title and his riches, the milkmaid's kiss came just before she left to join her fiance, and the servingman's life has been lost to the perils that lie outside the forest.  In the end, however, the prince's final transformation from frog into a man again is greater than the first.  He has embraced humility, learned compassion, and now appreciates the value of loyalty.  Contrary to other takes on this story, the prince's story is more about these lessons than it is about romantic love.

Auditioners ought to have read the script that is located in both green rooms.  The director is looking for actors who can bring the dialogue to life, and who can also infuse it with comedy, movement, and creativity.  All actors (The Frog Prince, especially) ought to have a strong sense of comedic timing and a good grasp on the language and rhythms of the play.

Arkansaw Bear

By Aurand Harris - Directed by Jamie Norton

Saddened and bewildered at her grandfather's approaching death, Tish runs to her "special tree." There, in a world of fantasy provided by her wish on a star, she meets the world's greatest dancing bear. He is old, like her grandfather, and is running away—from death. In trying to help him, she begins to understand the meaning of both life and death, which helps her to cope with her own sadness. The play blends realism and fantasy, pathos and humor. It is delightfully theatrical, with music, magic and dance, and enthusiastically applauded by children's audiences and family audiences. Cast of 6.

Auditioners should come ready for cold reads and ready to play. The director is looking for actors who are willing to make bold choices and capable of finding humor between the lines.
