M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors

M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors


WKU M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors are current undergraduate students selected to assist in the implementation of the M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan transition program. 

Mentors primarily serve as role models to new WKU students while actively engaging, organizing, and leading events throughout the week.

Enthusiastic

They exude the WKU Spirit and engage others in the excitement of being at WKU.

Knowledgeable

They provide new students and their parents and family members with information regarding campus services, departments, and resources, and strive to get new students connected to the University and student body.

 

Team Players

They are frequently required to cooperate and communicate to successfully manage challenging situations and make decisions and support and appreciate one another.

Resourceful

They adapt to changing circumstances, think quickly on their feet, and are always willing and ready to take on additional tasks and accept new responsibilities to ensure the success of M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan.

 

The minimum expectations and responsibilities for M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors include: 

  1. Attend and actively participate in M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentor training (to be scheduled.)

  2. Serve as a role model  for new students by adhering to all University guidelines and housing policies and exhibiting responsibility and high levels of maturity.

  3. Assist with the organization and implementation of M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan activities.

    • Assist with opening day events as/if needed.

    • Set-up and tear-down of assigned social and special events.

    • Assist with Class Photo and Topper Traditions.
  4. Implementing crisis response team if a situation occurs.

  5. Additional duties as assigned.

The minimum qualifications for M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors include: 

  1. Minimum 2.0 cumulative G.P.A. (at time position is offered and throughout time of service).

  2. Good judicial standing with the department of Housing and Residence Life and the University.

  3. Be reliable, responsible, confident, flexible, willing to help, and an effective communicator focused on building teamwork and fostering working relationships.

  4. Relate well with students, parents, family members, faculty, staff, and administrators.

  5. Demonstrate a desire to learn about Western Kentucky University, its traditions, regulations, people, and programs.

  6. Previous attendance at M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan preferred (as student participant).

  7. Cannot be employed by Housing & Residence Life as a Resident Assistant at the time of program.

The benefits for M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors Include: 

  1. Moving into fall campus housing assignments early (one week before other upperclassmen students).

  2. Gain volunteer hours throughout the week of M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan through various activities and serving the incoming new students.

  3. Opportunity to:

    • Enhance and develop professional skills in leadership, interpersonal relations, communication, public speaking, and teambuilding. In addition to resume building and professional development.

    • Network and connect with university faculty, staff, administrators while increasing knowledge about WKU and its offered resources

  4. 10 free meals for the week.

  5. M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors apparel and gear.

The 2024 M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentor position begins TENTATIVELY on August 9 and ends on August 16. Training will begin Friday, August 9.

Please note that the beginning date is subject to change. Listed below are dates and events M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors are required to attend.  Specific dates are mentioned where applicable.

  1. M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors return to campus early. More information to come.

  2. M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentor training will begin on prior to M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan. Training is mandatory unless arrangements have been made in advance and approved.

  3. M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors will be scheduled to work on specific events and may be required to arrive early, before the event is to take place, and stay late, after the event is over.  Breaks may be scheduled but may be rescheduled due to conflicts.

  4. M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan Mentors are requested to clear their schedules and refrain from participating in other activities August 9-16, due to the training and implementation schedule of the M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan program.  Exceptions to this are RARE.
