Students, faculty and staff in WKU’s GSKyTeach program, Psychology Department and School of Teacher Education presented a research poster and four research papers at the 2013 Education and Math and Engineering Technology Conference hosted by Hawaii University International Conferences in Honolulu June 10-12.

Drs. Pamela Jukes and Lisa Murley of the School of Teacher Education presented a research paper titled, “Technology and Teacher Candidates: Setting the Bar Higher.”

Dr. Lisa C. Duffin, Department of Psychology and SKyTeach, presented a research poster titled, “What Motivates People from STEM-Related Career Trajectories to Change to Teaching?”

GSKyTeach graduates Mollie Robertson and Lori Froedge presented research papers titled, “5E Instruction Model Workshop: The Underpinning of Extraordinary Mathematics Lessons” and “Grade Cam Making Grading as Easy as Snapping a Picture,” respectively.  Both graduates were mentored by GSKyTeach Executive Director Dr. Martha M. Day. Dr. Day presented a research paper titled, “GSKyTeach at Western Kentucky University, Preparing STEM Teachers for Service in High-Needs High Schools.”

The GSKyTeach program was established in 2009 through a Teacher Quality Partnership grant from the U.S. Department of Education in an effort to improve the quality of mathematics, physics and chemistry teachers in high-needs high schools in Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Ky.  To date, the GSKyTeach program has awarded master’s degrees to 29 individuals who are now serving as mathematics, physics and chemistry teachers in Louisville High Schools.  The GSKyTeach program is jointly operated through Ogden College of Science and Engineering and the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences at WKU.
