Thermogravimetric Analysis
The thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) is used to measure weight loss of a sample under specified temperature and atmosphere concentrations in various solid materials. The instrument is commonly used for moisture, volatile matter and ash determinations. Approximately 1 gram of sample is loaded into a sample crucible and placed in the instrument. The sample is heated according to the specified temperatures releasing water vapor, volatile materials or combustion products. The instrument can determine the amount of water vapor or other materials released by the change in sample weight.
Typical methods include:
ASTM method D 5142
