WKU Libraries is excited to announce the opening of our newest exhibit, "The Civil War in Primary Sources," located at The Commons at Helm Library in The History Room. Curated by Special Collections Librarian Joe Shankweiler and Library Assistant Emma Newton, this compelling exhibition showcases materials from WKU Special Collections that delve into the history of the American Civil War, Bowling Green's role in the conflict, media coverage of the era, and much more.
Visitors are invited to explore a wide array of primary sources that provide unique insights into this pivotal period in American history. From letters and diaries to photographs and newspapers, the exhibit offers a firsthand look at the people and events that shaped the Civil War.
The exhibit presents primary sources which are important resources in higher education as they provide direct, unfiltered access to historical events, perspectives, and experiences. These sources, such as letters, diaries, photographs, and newspapers, offer firsthand accounts that allow students and researchers to engage with the past in a meaningful way. By studying primary sources, individuals can develop critical thinking skills, enhance their research abilities, and gain a deeper understanding of complex historical contexts.
Additionally, primary sources help students develop empathy and appreciation for diverse voices and experiences, fostering a more nuanced and inclusive understanding of history. At WKU Libraries, the use of primary sources encourages students to become active participants in the exploration and interpretation of the past, empowering them to engage with history in a more authentic and profound manner.
In addition to the exhibit, The Commons at Helm Library will soon host a special event featuring a gallery talk from Dr. Katherine Lennard, Frockt Family Chair of the History Department. Details for this event will be announced in the near future, so be on the lookout for more information. For more information on this event please contact Andrew Adler, Chair of the Department of Library Collections & Discovery:andrew.adler@wku.edu.
The "The Civil War in Primary Sources" exhibit is open to the public, and visitors are encouraged to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn more about WKU Special Collections and the rich history of the Civil War.
