- Wednesday, March 12th, 2025

The Western Kentucky University Board of Regents voted at its first quarterly meeting of the year in February to award University Distinguished Professor status to Dr. Rui Zhang, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, effective July 1 of this year.
Dr. Zhang has been at WKU since 2006, and this distinction is recognized through his outstanding contributions in teaching, research, and public service, making him an exemplary member of WKU’s faculty.
He has exhibited a strong dedication to his students, allowing them to grow in their knowledge and skills in chemistry and develop professionally as individuals. His door is always open to students and colleagues alike, and he actively participates in departmental decision-making.
Contributing to the university, the department, and his field, Dr. Zhang has made a significantly positive impact on his students and colleagues during his time on the Hill.
“Dr. Zhang is widely recognized for his research prowess, publishing regularly in high-impact journals, securing over $2 million in external funding, serving on multiple NSF panels, and presenting at national and international conferences,” Dr. David Brown, Dean of Ogden College of Science & Engineering said. “ But above all, he is committed to student success. From student comments, successes, and multiple CITL honors, we know that Dr. Zhang is an excellent classroom teacher, but he goes beyond. He is an engaging advisor who cares for his students.”
The University Distinguished Professor designation intends to recognize faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in teaching, research, and service. Candidates for this title must have held the rank of professor for at least five years, completed five or more years of service to WKU, have a sustained record of excellence, and contribute meaningfully to WKU’s mission and vision.
