Registrations are still being taken for the 11th annual Girls in Science Day being held Saturday (April 14) at WKU.

The event provides girls in fourth to seventh grades with an opportunity to explore topics in math, technology, engineering and science; to talk with teachers and scientists conducting research at WKU; and to learn about career opportunities.

Registrations will be processed for the first 240 girls to submit their forms.  If room is still available then walk-ins will be accepted on Saturday, but in order to be guaranteed a T-shirt, backpack and your choice of classes then please request a form and return it as soon as possible. Registration fee is $5 (scholarships are available upon request).

The Girls in Science day begins at 7:30 a.m. when the girls are dropped off and signed in by a parent/guardian in the lobby of the Thompson Complex Central Wing.  During the morning sessions the girls attend three classes of their choice in several areas of science, mathematics and technology.

This year 14 classes are being offered in various locations in the Ogden College of Science and Engineering and include such topics as build your own alien, make your own root beer, look at a termite’s stomach through a microscope, watch a model volcano explode 20 feet in the air, and more.

In the afternoon the girls are given a boxed lunch and then escorted to Grise Hall Auditorium to watch the Chemistry Magic Show where Professor Alicia McDaniel will set herself on fire and perform other amazing experiments. Family members are invited to attend this show, which finishes at 3:30 p.m. signaling the end of the event.
