Teams from Briarwood Elementary School and Cub Run Elementary School won the 14^th annual Kentucky Bluegrass LEGO Robotics Competition on Saturday (Feb. 22).

Students from the WKU Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honors Society worked with WKU Engineering faculty and staff to conduct the event at Drakes Creek Middle School.

A total of 91 students competed on 32 teams in either the “Engineer-in-Training” division for elementary school teams or the “Professional Engineers” division for middle school and more experienced teams.

The winner of the EIT Division was the Briarwood team of Luke Wilson, Jason Kash and Nick Kang. The winner of the PE Division was the Cub Run team of Mercedes Logsdon and Jasmine McDowell.

In the competition, elementary and middle school teams were given the challenge of building an autonomous robot from LEGO Mindstorm kits to navigate two different surfaces: (1) an autonomous driving course following winding roads and roadblocks to complete as quickly and accurately as possible and (2) a game of LEGO Mindstorm Minecraft, where the robots had to gather as many resources as possible in two minutes.

In addition to the participants, more than 200 coaches and parents attended the competition. The competition kicked off in early January, and many of the students, coaches and parents visited the Engineering and Biological Sciences building to test and prepare their devices at help sessions offered by WKU Engineering.
