Biology - Optometry School Facts and Figures
There are presently 20 Schools and Colleges of Optometry in the United States and Puerto Rico. For the 2009 entering class, there were 2,822 applicants (9,021 applications) for 1,666 spots in optometry schools or about 1.7 applicants per opening. Compared to 2008, the number of applications was up 9.7% (owing to 3 new schools opening in 2009). The State of Kentucky does not have a school or college of optometry, but has contracted with Southern College of Optometry in Memphis TN to take up to 8 KY residents, and the University of Alabama in Birmingham AL, and Indiana University in Bloomington, IN for 3 each. Students awarded KY seats pay in-state residents tuition.
