- WKU Gender & Women’s Studies
- Monday, October 9th, 2023
On Friday, October 20, Drs. Kristi Branham, Kelly Reames, Cheryl Hopson, and Leigh Johnson of the English Department will discuss their recent book, Navigating Women’s Friendships in American Literature and Culture, at the annual Genderations Luncheon. The event, which is hosted by the Gender and Women’s Studies Program, will take place in HCIC 1011. Lunch will be served at noon, with a panel discussion to follow from 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Navigating Women’s Friendships in American Literature and Culture is a collection of critical essays that explore the place women’s friendship in women’s literary and artistic production. Analyzing cultural portrayals of women’s friendships in fiction, letters, and film, these essays collectively suggest new models of literary interpretation that do not prioritize heterosexual romance, but instead treat friendships as mature and meaningful relationships that contribute to identity formation and political coalition. Addressing the complexities of how twentieth- and twenty-first-century cultural texts construe women’s friendships as they navigate patriarchal institutions, this collection advances scholarship on friendship beyond men and masculine models.
If you would like to attend the luncheon portion of the event, please RSVP by Oct. 15 at this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1NqSS5y-H1jn-vV3vsCVJyZmx5dpDd6Z1FQLxCTMBjPQ/edit
