WKU SAV-Y Program Receives Department of Education Approval
- Monday, January 22nd, 2024
WKU’s College of Education and Behavioral Sciences is thrilled to announce the Department of Education's approval of the WKU SAV-Y program. This Comprehensive Transition Program (CTP) will provide eligible students with an intellectual disability the opportunity to enroll in WKU courses to acquire workplace skills and competencies while gaining academic knowledge in an inclusive environment. The ultimate goal of the program is to support individuals with intellectual disabilities in finding employment opportunities within our region.
The three-year CTP program is designed to offer a college experience, blending in-class learning with valuable campus experiences. Each year focuses on a theme as outlined:
- Year 1: Social Expectations In the first year, students acclimate to the college experience, engage in foundational and independent living courses while building a meaningful relationship with peers.
- Year 2: Academics Year two concentrates on knowledge and skill development for work and independence. Students will shape their educational journey through student-centered plans and selectcourses aligned with their career interests.
- Year 3: Vocational The third year emphasizes the transition to the workplace and includes experiential learning opportunities, such as internships, to enhance employability.
Developed in collaboration with the University of Kentucky Human Development Institute, this initiative represents a significant step toward creating an enriching, supportive, and inclusive postsecondary experience at WKU. The WKU SAV-Y program will be the first of its kind in south central Kentucky.
The WKU SAV-Y program will be housed in the Suzanne Vitale Clinical Education Complex at WKU and welcome the first cohort of students in Fall 2024.
