Western Kentucky University invites high school sophomores and juniors to apply for the 2024 First-Gen High School Summer Camp from June 2-5 on WKU’s main campus in Bowling Green. This no-cost, residential camp aims to prepare future first-generation college students for academic success and campus life. The initiative is part of WKU’s F1rst Gen effort, supporting students whose parents have not earned a four-year degree in the U.S.
Building on the success of its inaugural year in 2023, the camp has expanded to include more participants and an additional day of activities. Attendees will participate in a schedule of dynamic activities, engaging workshops by WKU faculty and staff, and social gatherings – all designed to introduce them to the college experience.
Previous campers praised the program for offering a real-life glimpse into college, providing valuable resources, and fostering connections among students. One of last year’s campers said, “Yes, I would recommend this camp because it gives me an experience of how college life is and how I can find my resources when needed. It gives me an idea of how the classes look and work.” Another camper remarked, “Yes, I would recommend this camp to both my friends and peers because it is a fun journey, and you get to meet new people and get closer. Also, you learn new things you never knew about college.”
