The WKU Department of English welcomes its fourth class of students in the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program this fall.
The incoming students are Brian Baker of Erda, Utah; Hailey Hanks of White House, Tennessee; Bradley Hathaway of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Lauren Haynes of Madison, Virginia; Matt Steinhafel of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Caroline Sutphin of Pulaski, Virginia.
"We're very excited about this group of talented writers. We had more applications than ever this year, and these six students rose to the top,” said Dr. David Bell, Associate Professor of English and Director of Creative Writing Program. “In the short time we've had this MFA program at WKU, our students have published chapbooks, appeared in numerous literary journals, gone on to study in excellent Ph.D. programs, and won a Fulbright. We think these six incoming students will build on that already impressive record."
The six students are fully funded with teaching assistantships for the two-year, residential course of study.
The MFA in Creative Writing program prepares students for lives as writers of novels, short fiction, creative nonfiction, scripts and poetry and related pursuits such as teaching, literary editing and publishing. Students also complete a secondary concentration in literature, composition/rhetoric or teaching English as a second language in order to give them additional options for employment after graduation.
The program of study consists of 48 credit hours of graduate course work, culminating in comprehensive exams and the completion of a publishable creative thesis in fiction, poetry, scriptwriting or creative nonfiction.
