A native Kentuckian, Dr. Jerry Brotzge joined EEAS Department in August 2022. The author of over 40 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Brotzge has a long record of research that spans a wide range of topics, including weather instrumentation and networks, numerical weather prediction, land-surface feedbacks, emergency management, winter weather and the impacts of weather on health. Much of his recent collaborative work has focused on how best to utilize new weather networks and sensors to improve NOAA warning and forecast capabilities.
After graduating with a PhD in meteorology from the University of Oklahoma (OU) in collaboration with the Oklahoma Mesonet, Dr. Brotzge continued working at OU as a Research Scientist with the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS), and later as data manager for the NSF Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) program. In 2014, Dr. Brotzge began work at the University at Albany as the Program Manager of the New York State Mesonet (NYSM), where he led the design and deployment of the NYSM, NYC Micronet, and associated roadside, snow, flux, and profiler networks. As Director of the Kentucky Climate Center, Dr. Brotzge is seeking new partnerships and students in agriculture, education, emergency management, energy, health, and transportation with the end goal to apply high resolution, high-quality environmental information to improve the safety and well-being of society.
