Sport & the Future of Religion in the American South

In this talk, WKU Professor Bain-Selbo explores the ways in which sport in the American South serves as a site for religious expression and as a mechanism to preserve a distinct Southern identity - an identity strongly shaped by Southern history and religion.

This session will include an overview of the social and emotional development of gifted children, emphasizing what has been learned from research. There are many myths that do not reflect the true realities of gifted children, and this presentation will focus on the special needs associated with growing up gifted.  Gifted children generally develop in an asynchronous or uneven pattern, with, for example, intellectual development typically outpacing emotional growth.  This asynchrony and other characteristics, such as overexcitabilities and perfectionism, can lead to difficulties in a gifted individual’s adjustment.  Dr. Amend will review the social and emotional aspects of growing up gifted and provide practical advice for parents and educators.

While the importance of social and emotional development of gifted youth is being increasingly recognized, it is still sometimes overlooked in the school setting.  Gifted learners should be provided with affective curriculum, differentiated guidance, and counseling services as needed to address their specialized needs that arise from their asynchronous development, over-excitabilities, perfectionism, and other characteristics associated with growing up gifted.  Dr. Amend will revisit the research on the social and emotional development of gifted youth and explore the benefits and barriers to implementation of appropriate services.  Discussion will focus on ways to improve affective services and strategies for attending to the social and emotional development of gifted individuals.

The Special Needs Summit is an event for parents, caregivers, professionals, staff, and students who have an interest in the special needs community. Workshops will be offered on various topics relating to special needs.  The keynote speaker is Dwayne Ballen, TV journalist and author of Journey With Julian.

Girls in grades 5-12 will have the opportunity to explore various topics in math, technology, engineering and science during exciting interactive sessions.  Attendees will meet women employed in STEM careers.  At the end of the day, participants will view a spectacular Chemistry show.

• Arrive Early. Employers that are traveling from out of town may leave early.

• Bring their resume. Please tell them to have a few copies of their updated resume to provide to interested employers. If it is out of date they can stop by The Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) for some last minute coaching without an appointment in DSU 2001. We are open until 6 PM on Mondays and Tuesdays. 

• Do Their Research. Visit the CCPD Website for a list of the employers attending. An informed student has an advantage.

• Free Professional Photograph: We will be taking headshots for LinkedIn and other social media.

Stacey Forsythe, Assistant to the Dean for the College of Health and Human Services has had great success with her communication efforts by putting a plan down on paper and working with WKU Media Relations. She will share her experience with us at the meeting. Several other things are being added to the agenda, but we will keep the meeting to one hour or less.

Dr. Mary Ruth Coleman, a national expert on twice-exceptional children, will share information and strategies about this group of gifted young people with one or more disabilities during this free event. The Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation is hosting the WKU Business Plan Competition.  

A 250 word e-mail submission is due by 11:59pm on October 22, the initial round of the competition will be held on December 1 at 4pm in GH 240, and the final round of the competition will be held at the Center for Research & Development on Saturday, Dec. 5.

Anne C. Richard, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration, will be at WKU on Friday, October 23. She will be giving a speech on "Educating Syrian Refugee Children in a Time of War" in the Gary Ransdell Hall Auditorium (Room 1074) at 1:00, which is open to the public. This will be a swipeable event. 

Assistant Secretary Richard is the lead person in the U.S. government dealing with refugee issues globally. She will be speaking on the steps the U.S. is taking to help Syrian refugee children displaced by war continue their education and the challenges the students and the donor community face in doing so. Her remarks will be followed by a Q&A session, ending at approximately 2:00.

Co-sponsored by the Office of International Programs and the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, Ms. Richard¹s speech will be the first event in this year's "Diplomacy on the Hill"series. We especially urge everyone interested in refugee issues, the Middle East, childhood education, and those students interested in careers in foreign affairs or working in international NGOs to attend.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. –Western Kentucky University’s Ogden College of Science and Engineering and the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative will host the 2^nd Annual STEMshot! rocketry competition for students in grades 4-12.

STEMshot!, a compressed air rocketry competition giving students the opportunity to engage in a challenging real-world problem based activity designed to enhance student’s critical thinking skills and understanding of next generation science content, will be held Oct. 24.

The competition will begin at 9 a.m. at WKU’s Center for Research and Development (2413 Nashville Road) as teams compete head to head in a horizontal range competition.  Rockets will launch from a double launcher at the same time, same angle, and same pressure.  The winning rockets (longest distance) will continue to compete in a single elimination contest to determine first place through fourth place winners.

Weather permitting, at 1 p.m. the competition will continue at the Aviation Heritage Park (1825 Three Springs Road) as students launch rockets again in a head to head maximum time of flight competition. This will also be a single elimination contest with rockets launched side by side vertically at the same pressure.  Contest will again determine first place through fourth place winners.

The STEMshot! initiative is a collaborative effort between WKU’s Department of Engineering and SKyTeach program and the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative. GRREC serves 41 school districts providing professional learning opportunities to teachers and administrators with the purpose of increasing student success.

Thursday October 29^th  at 6:00 PM in 3023 DSU,  Dr. Charles Haynes will be delivering the annual L.Y. Lancaster - Hugh Puckett Lecture. His title is “Viral Threats and Emerging Technology to Combat Them”.  In the talk he will discuss Ebola and the recently developed vaccine against it.  While Ebola is a provocative example of a global threat, it does not presently represent a major threat in North America.  He therefore will also describe emerging viral epidemics here in the United States and Canada, and the technologies being developed in our laboratories and elsewhere to combat them.

If you manage an official social media presence for your respective area, we would like to invite you to our first WKU Social Media Council meeting.  The meeting will take place Friday, October 30th from 10 am – 11 am. in DSU, 3007.

Many of you all are doing great things with social media in your areas or you might be interested in learning about how to enhance or strengthen your presences.  We hope to take some time to meet face-to-face to talk a little strategy, a little best practice, and to talk about how we can all work together to make sure that we are doing all we can to spread the word about events, programs, activities, and initiatives within your areas.
