Weekly Legislative Update - January 14, 2022

The 2022 session of the Kentucky General Assembly is underway. The first week was dedicated to redistricting, which is required following the Census to make sure that all citizens are equally represented. House Bill 2 (HB2) and Senate Bill 2 (SB2) provide the new districts for the Kentucky House of Representatives and Kentucky Senate. Due to changes in population Warren County lost two representatives – Representative Jason Petrie and Representative Steve Riley – and gained two senators – Senator David Givens and Senator Max Wise. Both bills have passed and are now waiting for Governor Beshear’s signature. You can view HB2 here and SB2 here.
The House of Representatives introduced the Executive Branch Biennial Budget, House Bill 1 (HB1) last week, just ahead of Governor Beshear’s budget address. Both the House and Governor Beshear’s budgets provide increases in funding for higher education and funds to address necessary asset preservation on university campuses. We are grateful for the investment in higher education and will continue to work with our legislators as HB1 moves through the legislative process. You can view HB1 here.
I will provide a weekly update on the WKU Government Relations website, www.wku.edu/govrelations. Please visit this site for a full list of bills we are tracking; the bill tracking sheet is updated every Friday.
