Weekly Legislative Update - February 7, 2025
- Friday, February 7th, 2025
The 2025 General Assembly – referred to as the short session – began on January 6. The short legislative session occurs during odd numbered years and lasts just 30 working days. Legislators used the first week of session to officially elect House of Representatives and Senate leadership, appoint committee chairs and make committee assignments. This year the House of Representatives divided the Education Committee into two separate committees – one for K-12 and one for Postsecondary. The General Assembly adjourned on January 10 and reconvened on February 4 for the last 26 days of session.
Almost 500 bills have been filed to date, including House Bill (HB) 118 sponsored by Representative Michael Meredith, which would allow WKU to offer up to five PhD programs in areas that directly affect the workforce and economy of Kentucky. You can view HB118 here.
I will post weekly reports and updated legislative tracking reports to the wku.edu/govrelations website every Friday during the legislative session. You can view the current legislative tracking report here. Please contact me if you have any questions or comments on specific pieces of legislation.
