MHC Academic Advising
Academic advising guides students in navigating their educational journey, aligning academic goals with career aspirations. Advisors offer personalized support to promote student success and facilitate academic achievement and personal growth.
MHC scholars will need to attend two separate advising appointments. One appointment with their major advisor, and another appointment with their Honors advisor in order to receive priority registration.
Advising holds are lifted by primary/major academic advisors after the advising meeting is completed, but honors advisors grant priority registration status after the honors-specific session is completed.
Honors scholars are held to the following advising expectations:
- First- and Second-year Scholars: meet with Honors advisor, ACDC advisor, and faculty mentor once per semester
- Third- and Fourth-year Scholars: meet with Honors advisor and faculty mentor once per semester
Requirements for Good Standing in the Mahurin Honors College
- A cumulative GPA of 3.2
- NOTE: Students must have a GPA of 3.2 to graduate, but are eligible for GPA appeals between 3.0 - 3.2
Warning Semester Procedures
-
Students placed on warning semester have failed to meet the requirement of a 3.2 GPA.
-
Warning Semesters are determined by a student’s overall cumulative GPA and are evaluated at the end of every semester.
-
To stay enrolled in the honors college, students on warning must earn a TERM GPA that is higher than their cumulative (example: a student with a 2.96 cumulative GPA must earn a 2.97 fall or spring term GPA to stay in the honors college for the next semester).
-
Students are placed on warning every semester (given they meet the requirement above) until their cumulative GPA rises above 3.2.
-
There is not currently a maximum number of semesters a student can be on warning.
-
Students on Warning Semester will be required to make an advising appointments.
-
At the end of each term, academic advisors will evaluate students’ final grades.
-
If a student’s final grades by the end of the current term do not equal a term GPA higher than their cumulative GPA, MHC faculty and staff have the right to remove students from the Mahurin Honors College.
Students seeking a GPA appeal form for graduation should meet with a Mahurin Honors College advisor.
The Mahurin Honors College offers three academic tracks: Non-Thesis, CE/T, and 18-hour Honors in the Major.
