Caden Lucas, a sophomore from Harned, Kentucky, majoring in Political Science, Legal Studies, and International Affairs at Western Kentucky University (WKU), has been elected as the inaugural Student Senator representing the Mahurin Honors College (MHC) in WKU’s Student Government Association (SGA).
In this historic role, Caden will advocate for the interests and concerns of MHC students, faculty, and staff, particularly as the Honors College embarks on an important program revision. His commitment to this position is fueled by his passion for the MHC, which holds the distinction of being the first Honors College in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Caden recognizes the MHC’s capacity to positively impact the lives of students across the Commonwealth, and he is eager to contribute to its ongoing legacy by "helping students every step of the way in their ascent towards excellence."
Caden’s connection to the MHC community is further strengthened by his role as an Honors Teaching Fellow for HON 251: Citizen and Self, where he works closely with first-year Honors students helping them connect their academic and personal interests to opportunities for prosocial engagement and advocacy.
"Working as an Honors Teaching Fellows has given me a unique opportunity to engage with students, and I look forward to expanding that relationship through this new role," Lucas said. He encourages the entire MHC community to engage with him, noting that he plans to spend more time in the Honors College and International Center (HCIC) building and across campus in his various service roles. In addition to his new position as the Mahurin Honors College Senator, Caden is actively involved in WKU Spirit Masters, the Pre-Law Student Association, and Omicron Delta Kappa.
Caden is a strong advocate for student involvement in the SGA and urges his peers to support the SGA’s mission on WKU’s campus and in the community. He believes that active participation in student government is crucial for the betterment of the university community and is committed to ensuring that the voices of MHC students are heard and valued. Students interested in exploring SGA can begin by attending their weekly Tuesday meetings at 5PM in DSU 2081 (SGA Chambers).
