Dylan Carmona (MHC ‘25) is one of the newest scholars in The Mahurin Honors College (MHC). During the college application process, the MHC stood out to him because, “when I toured the MHC, I realized it's a perfect fit for my pre-med goals, and I loved the smaller class sizes so I can know the professors better.” In his short time here, Dylan has already experienced the MHC community stating, “I wasn't expecting the MHC to be such a unified group of people and have its own identity. Especially living in Minton, you are just embraced with community. I have also loved all the social activities the MHC offers.”
Dylan plans to immerse himself further in the MHC and abroad. “My goal is to study abroad in Italy next year. Hopefully that can happen. I'm also trying to get involved with the MHC more. My H4 counselor was really cool, and I liked him a lot and what H4 stands for, so hopefully I can be a counselor for the camp.” H4, or the Honors First-Year Orientation Program, is a unique opportunity for MHC scholars to bond off campus while learning key success points for MHC scholars before the start of the school year. Many older scholars serve as counselors to mentor and advise the freshman about tackling college successfully.
Dylan stated the MHC challenges him to be the best version of himself. “Obviously one aspect of the MHC is holding yourself to a higher standard with respect to academics and involvement. But in addition to that, if we claim to be set apart, we must act like it. We should constantly display to the other students at Western our passion, drive, and spirit.”
Dylan was also recognized this year as a recipient of the MHC-SGA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Membership Fee Scholarship. “To me, this means I am able to represent one minority and all first generation college students. I hope to use this to make sure everyone feels seen.”
We cannot wait to see what Dylan does in the coming years!
