Working Remotely Security

Moving from an office environment to working remotely can create security risks. Follow these recommendations to help protect your data and devices when working from home.

Recommendations

Use Strong Passwords

When working from home or the office, it is important to cover your security basics. Start by ensuring you use strong and unique passwords. Use 10 characters or more with a mix of numbers, symbols, and both upper and lowercase letters. Do not use the same password for multiple accounts. If someone were to hack your account on one site, they could use that information to access your other accounts if they use the same password.

Password Tips

Avoid Phishing Scams

Scammers are using remote work as subject matter for their phishing scams. Be suspicious of emails from someone you don’t know, as well as emails that appear to be from someone you know but are asking for unusual things.

Lock Your Screen

Get in the habit of locking your screen when you get up from your computer. Also ensure that your mobile devices are set to lock their screens when not in use.

Connect to Secure Wi-Fi

Most Wi-Fi connections these days are secure, however, some older installations may not be. Make sure encryption is turned on and a passcode is required to connect to your wireless network.

Use Antivirus and a Firewall

Ensure you have antivirus installed and a firewall turned on. Windows 10 has antivirus and firewall turned on by default, and should be up to date if you are getting Windows Updates.

Install Updates

Make sure your operating system and applications are updated regularly. Security updates help keep your device safe from attackers by patching vulnerabilities.
