- Monday, November 11th, 2024
WKU’s “Roaring Red” Homecoming 2024, a nod to the energetic spirit of the 1920s, is set to bring alumni, students and the Bowling Green community together for a weekend of celebration, tradition and fun Nov. 14-16.
“Homecoming has always been a time for alumni to return to the Hill, reconnect with old friends and make new memories,” said Zach Marcum, Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement & Philanthropy. “This year, with our ‘Roaring Red’ theme, we’re turning back the clock to an era of bold style, music and celebration. We’re expecting one of the most exciting Homecomings yet, with something for everyone.”
The festivities begin on Thursday, Nov. 14, with the annual Hilltopper Excellence Awards. Held at Knicely Conference Center, the event will honor outstanding alumni and benefactors, including the induction of the 2024 Hall of Distinguished Alumni.
“We are so proud to celebrate the achievements of our alumni,” said Laura Smith, Associate Director of Alumni Engagement. “These individuals have made a lasting impact on WKU and their communities, and it’s wonderful to recognize them during such a special time.”
Friday, Nov. 15, will be packed with events, beginning with the Chili, Cheese & Community luncheon at Montana Grille, which supports Junior Achievement of South Central Kentucky. Attendees can enjoy a delicious meal while contributing to an important cause.
Later that day, the real buzz begins in downtown Bowling Green with Fun on Fountain Row, where businesses will offer discounts and specials ahead of the Homecoming Parade.
“Downtown is the heart of our city,” said Telia Butler, Downtown Development Coordinator for the City of Bowling Green. “We are looking forward to bringing the spirit of Homecoming to Fountain Row with special offers and themed menus at our local Downtown businesses, especially those run by passionate local WKU alumni.”
At 5:30 p.m., the Homecoming Parade will begin at the iconic steps of Cherry Hall and proceed down College Street to Fountain Square Park. “The parade is always a highlight,” Marcum added. “It’s a tradition that brings the community together and showcases the spirit of WKU.”
Afterward, the celebrations will continue with Big Red’s Roar, a pep rally that will light up Fountain Square with music, cheers and appearances from the WKU Football team, Big Red and the WKU Big Red Marching Band.
The night doesn’t end there. After the pep rally, alumni and young professionals will head to the downtown bars for Spirits at the Speakeasies, a 1920s-themed event hosted by the WKU Young Alumni Council. Drink specials, door prizes and a lively atmosphere will ensure that the evening is one to remember.
“It’s amazing to see the WKU community come together,” said Lyn Dawsyn Steenbergen, Secretary of the WKU Young Alumni Council. “Spirits at the Speakeasies is one of my favorite new events because it blends Homecoming tradition with a fun, modern twist. It’s a great way to end the night on a high note.”
On Saturday, Nov. 16, the spirit of Homecoming will reach its peak with Tailgate & Celebrate on South Lawn. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., this fan-favorite event invites alumni and fans to wear their best WKU red, enjoy good food and get ready for the big game.
At 11 a.m., the Hilltoppers will take the field at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium to face Louisiana Tech in the annual Homecoming football game. “There’s no better way to wrap up Homecoming than cheering on the Tops,” Marcum said. “It’s a tradition that embodies everything we love about WKU.”
Making It All Possible
A celebration of this scale is made possible through the collaborative efforts of several campus and community partners.
“We are incredibly grateful to our partners in WKU Athletics, Student Activities, Downtown Bowling Green and the many campus departments and student organizations that help bring Homecoming to life each year,” Marcum said. “Their hard work behind the scenes ensures that every event runs smoothly and offers all Hilltoppers a weekend to remember.”
Special thanks also go to our community partners, including local businesses, for their continued support and participation in making this Homecoming an unforgettable experience for all who attend.
