The Eta Zeta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., will host “Gaming Through It,” an event promoting mental health in Black men, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. November 9 in Downing Student Union’s Recreation Room.
The WKU chapter received a grant for the event from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and The National Alliance of Mental Illness.
“We are highlighting mental health in Black men as it is taboo in the Black community to discuss mental health which is very unfortunate,” Chapter Vice President Te’Yasmine D. Lynn said. “This in turn makes it harder for Black men to speak up and actively do things to improve their mental health such as therapy. We have taken this into consideration and are having our event to introduce therapy through gaming. Studies show that playing video games can reduce stress and improve one’s mental health.”
In addition to gaming, the event will feature a guest speaker discussing the significance of mental health in Black men and a student panel of NPHC fraternity representatives speaking on their own personal experiences. The chapter also is selling tickets for a PlayStation 5 that will be given away at the event.
