One of the most treasured aspects of The Mahurin Honors College (MHC) is its commitment to fostering community between scholars. In fact, the MHC hosts a student organization, the Honors Social Planning Board (HSPB), devoted to creating unique events that promote such fellowship. This Halloween, the HSPB organized a spooky event: The Nightmare on Normal Street. Scholars enjoyed pumpkin painting, trivia, a movie, and a costume contest.
Amanda Prichard (MHC ‘24) serves on the HSPB and asserted social events are vital to the MHC because, “they serve as a way to get more MHC scholars connected. Offering creatively themed events gives scholars something to look forward to during the stressful weeks such as this one with the addition of Homecoming and Halloween festivities as well as academics.”
“Social events specifically for MHC scholars,” adds HSPB member Jackson Ansari (MHC ‘24) “offer an opportunity to bring other like-minded scholars and students who also care about their academics together.”
Lily Lange (MHC ‘25) enjoyed attending The Nightmare on Normal Street Event. Lily mentioned that she cherishes the MHC for its balance of rigorous, challenging academics and entertaining and leisurely get-togethers. “I feel like the MHC utilizes events such as this one to encourage students to embrace a creative spirit and take a break, because it is a busy time for all of us. We have a lot of projects to do, so I thoroughly appreciate their efforts to give us a time to let loose and have fun and celebrate Halloween.”
Renee Reinhardt (MHC ‘25) agrees with Lily, “I appreciate opportunities to be messy and creative while meeting other scholars in an unprofessional setting.”
The HSPB is always welcoming new suggestions or ideas for events. And if you are naturally creative and enjoy collaborating with your peers, the HSPB would love to have you on the team!
