Why did you choose WKU’s School Psychology program? 

I chose this program for many reasons. First, I had such an amazing experience as an undergraduate psychology student at WKU. WKU’s School Psychology program was my first and only choice for graduate school. I also chose this program because of the School Psychology faculty. They want to see you grow as a professional within the field and are always willing to help you inside and outside of the classroom. They have been instrumental to my success within the program and as a future practicing School Psychologist. 

What key activities/organizations have shaped your WKU experience?

I was a member of a research team for three semesters as an undergraduate student at WKU. Before taking PSY 290 (Supervised Study in Psychology), I had never heard of School Psychology. I gained a wide variety of skills as a research team member, such as collecting data, reviewing research articles, scoring writing probes, interpreting statistics, presenting research posters, and mentoring students. The experience and knowledge I gained from being involved in research lead me to the career that I was searching for.

How have you already applied what you are learning? 

As a second year graduate student, I have been placed at two local elementary schools for my practicum placement. I have been able to apply what I learned during my first year of graduate school. I have given IQ and academic assessments, conducted observations in classrooms, completed a counseling case, attended various meetings, and worked alongside other professionals within the schools. Being able to work with students has been such a joy and privilege. 

What do you hope to do after graduation? 

I hope to work as a School Psychologist in an inner city school district to service a diverse and underprivileged student population.

What experience(s) have you had during your years as a WKU student that have helped or is helping you prepare for a career after graduation? 

The greatest aspect about graduate school is that the material that you learn in class is directly applicable to what you will be doing in your field. The WKU School Psychology program is intentional in providing a wide variety of experiences for its students to be able to work with preschoolers to high schoolers. These experiences prepare you for practicum, internship, and a future career in School Psychology. 

What has been the best part of your WKU experience? Why?

The best part of my WKU experience has definitely been getting to know my cohort. Including myself, there are eight of us. These seven individuals have been my rock throughout graduate school. I had no idea the impact they would have on me. They have supported me not just in school, but in life. I am proud of each and every one of them and honored to call them my friends. I have no doubt that we will remain close, even after graduation. 

Are there any life experiences that impacted you in your pursuit of obtaining this degree that you would like to share? 

Growing up, school and education has always been important to me and my main priority. This was instilled in me by my parents and grandparents. In 2021, I lost two of my grandparents, which were huge supporters of me continuing my education. In a sense, I am obtaining this degree for them, but also myself. After obtaining my Ed.S., I will have the most education in my family, which I take great pride in. I would not be where I am today without the love and support of my family. 

What advice do you have for future School Psychology students? 

My advice to future School Psychology students is to make sure that you develop effective self-care strategies. It is so easy to get caught up stressing about your responsibilities as a graduate student, but you also have to take care of yourself. Time management is also crucial to success, especially if you work on top of being in school. Above all, be excited that you are entering into such a rewarding and high-demand career!
