Students in Chinese language and calligraphy classes at WKU took active part in several fun activities to celebrate the Chinese New Year of Tiger. Some learned Chinese New Year songs “Gongxi Gongxi ni” or “Congratulations and Blessings for You”, some did paper cutting, while other made couplets. Students also read the article from The Washinton Post, and learned that not only do China and Taiwan have different traditions in Lunar New Year, but so do regions all around Asia, including Vietnam, South Korea, and Singapore.
The class also introduced the traditions like the hidden rules of the money to put into "red envelopes" and the reason why we eat turnip cake, a whole fish, apples and oranges in the "reunion dinner".
At the end of the class, the students wrote the spring couplets by themselves with the phrase includes, "Happy 虎 year" (Happy Year of the Tiger), "春" (Spring), "福" (Wealth), and "年年有餘" (Wish you have a year of abundance) to wish a great start of the new year!
