- Thursday, October 6th, 2022
October marked the start of LGBT History Month events on WKU’s campus.
Created in 1994 by a high school history teacher in Missouri called Rodney Wilson, October was initially chosen to include the by-then well-established National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11 and the anniversary of the first march on Washington DC by LGBT people in 1979 on Oct. 14.
This month's events include presentations, roundtable conversations, tabling, a celebration of the 5th anniversary of the Pride Center on campus, and more. A printable calendar is available at https://www.wku.edu/isec/lgbthistory/index.php
October 11th
- National Coming Out Day Tabling: Stop by the table for a photo, pride swag, or a treat and write an encouraging message to those who are still in the closet on a door that will be displayed in the Pride Center.
- Safe Zone Part 2: Ally to Advocate: Faculty, staff and students are invited to come participate in this Safe Zone training and learn how to advocate in the classroom and specifically address harmful and discriminatory remarks from other students from an LGBTQ+ student panel.
- The Sweet Talk: This is a conversation to discuss coming out stories, relationship health, love, and safety in the queer community with sweet treats served as a refreshment.
October 19th
- P.O.S.E.: This event will do a dive into deep topics such as sex work, homophobia, homelessness, and HIV/AIDS, based on the show with the same title. Clips of the show will be screened that exhibit each topic and have a candid conversation.
October 22nd
- BG Pride: Come celebrate and show your pride in Circus Square Park with music, vendors, food, and drag shows! Following the festivities, there will be a march to Bowling Green City Hall to rally for the fairness ordinance. Information available at https://www.fairness.org/bgpride/
