Dr. Matthew Shake to become Chair of the Department of Psychological Sciences
- Thursday, October 27th, 2022
Ogden College of Science and Engineering is pleased to announce that Dr. Matthew Shake will be the next Chair of the Department of Psychological Sciences.
Dr. Shake earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he trained at the interdisciplinary Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology. His scholarly research focuses on cognitive aging and self-regulation of behavior in older adulthood, with the goal of understanding the factors that promote healthy aging. In recent years, he has collaborated with exercise scientists to develop and promote a mobile application of Bingocize®, an exercise and learning program designed to improve older adult health outcomes. His work has been well-funded by multiple extramural agencies, including the National Institute on Aging, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and more.
As a first-generation college student himself, Dr. Shake says he understands the challenges many WKU students face and is enthusiastic about helping them achieve their dreams. Dr. Shake emphasizes active learning techniques in his classes and involves undergraduate and graduate students in every stage of the discovery process.
According to David Brown, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering, “The Department has developed a great reputation for research and student mentoring. Dr. Shake will be an excellent leader, helping the department continue – and increase – its positive momentum. I look forward to more great research and education coming from Psychological Sciences.”
Dr. Shake’s appointment as Chair will go into effect January 1, 2023.
