Western Kentucky University has been recognized as one of the nation's most environmentally responsible colleges for the 13th consecutive year, according to The Princeton Review®.
WKU is among 455 schools profiled in The Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges: 2023 Edition. The Princeton Review chose the schools based on a survey of 713 colleges in 2021-22 about their institutions’ commitments to the environment and sustainability.
“Being recognized for our sustainability efforts again this year continues to affirm the importance of our sustainability related programs and practices,” said Dr. Leslie North, Director of Sustainability. “We continue to solidify our place in conversations about the critical role of universities in local, regional, and even global sustainability goals, education, and outreach.”
The schools profiled in The Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges report on the colleges’ uses of renewable energy, their recycling and conservation programs, the availability of environmental studies in their academic offerings, and their career guidance for green jobs. The profiles also include information on the schools' admission requirements, cost, and financial aid.
WKU has created and maintained a culture of sustainability in the past two decades. Recent highlights at WKU include: launching the Farm-to-Campus program; launching a partnership with Logan Aluminum and Recyclops to enhance aluminum recycling options on campus; developing and dedicating the Kim Eisert Simpson Sensory Garden; launching the Share-A-Swipe program, a partnership between Office of Sustainability, WKU Restaurant Group and Student Government Association to help address food insecurity; and obtaining its third Green Restaurant Certification at the Chick-fil-A location in Downing Student Union. In addition, WKU Parking and Transportation Services established a micromobility partnership with the City of Bowling Green and Wheels to bring ebikes to campus.
