WKU biology professors attend national undergraduate research conference
- Monday, November 7th, 2011
WKU biology professors Dr. Rodney King and Dr. Shivendra Sahi participated in the Conference of Research Experiences for Undergraduates Student Scholarship in Arlington, Va.
The Oct. 16-17 conference was sponsored by the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR), a national organization with more than 700 individual members and 600 institutional members, and the National Science Foundation (NSF), a government granting agency that supports undergraduate research experiences.
The primary goal of CUR is to provide resources such as publications, workshops and outreach activities to support faculty and undergraduate students engaged in research. CUR works with agencies and foundations to enhance research opportunities and provide information on the importance of undergraduate research to state legislatures, private foundations, government agencies and the U.S. Congress.
Dr. Sahi, Dr. King and Dr. Audra Jennings (WKU Office of Scholar Development) administer a research experience for undergraduates (REU) program through a grant they received from the National Science Foundation. The three-year $300,000 grant provides 10 students intensive research training in WKU labs each summer.
Amanda Links, a participant in the 2011 Biology REU program, presented the results of her research experience at the conference. Links of Somers, Conn., is a student at Calvin College.
