Anna Storms (MHC ’24) is pursuing a major in Visual Arts with a concentration in Graphic Design. On top of that, she is minoring in Art History. She is currently a student worker in the letterpress studio within the WKU Art & Design Department. In addition, she is an active member of WKU’s graphic design organization, AIGA (American Institute for Graphic Arts) and worked for Student Publications on the Talisman for two semesters.
Like many scholars, Anna has augmented a few of her upper-level art courses. One of her augmentations included creating an additional project for one of her drawing courses. For this augmentation, she recreated a life size skeletal drawing of Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam.
“I think that (augmenting classes) is a really interesting aspect of being a part of the Mahurin Honors College as an art student specifically because you get to actually come up with projects yourself and have that control,” states Storms. “The other aspect of it is that no one else in the art department has unique projects that they come up with on their own, like I got to do with my augmentation.”
This past summer, Anna went on a 3-week study abroad program to London with other members of the Art & Design Department. There, she took two graphic design courses, a campaign course, as well as a typography course. She was able to expand her skills in design on this trip. Anna has even been honored with different awards for these pieces, amongst many others throughout her time here at WKU so far.
Her advice to fellow MHC scholars would be not to plan everything. She explained how you should go into college “with the idea that you’re here to learn not just what you’re getting a degree in, but also, learning communication skills in your clubs and your classes, how to interact professionally with people, organize your time and so many other valuable skills. If you have a bit more of a go with the flow idea coming into college, you’ll end up in a much better place.”
We are so proud of everything Anna has done, and we cannot wait to see her Ascent Towards Excellence continue!
