WKU finishes fifth nationally in ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition

Western Kentucky University’s Accursed placed fifth overall in the 36th annual American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) Concrete Canoe Competition.
WKU was among 20 teams in the competition held June 10-12 during the ASCE Civil Engineering Student Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
The top five finishers in the 2023 ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition were California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; Youngstown State University; University of Florida; Université Laval, Quebec City, Canada; and WKU.
WKU finished fourth in technical proposal and fifth in oral presentation. In canoe races, WKU finished third in men’s slalom, fifth in women’s slalom, fifth in women’s sprint and fifth in men’s sprint.
At 134 pounds, WKU’s canoe was the lightest at the competition and the lightest in WKU concrete canoe history. In 2022, WKU finished third overall, its best finish ever in the concrete canoe competition. WKU finished fourth overall in 2002, 2007 and 2016; and fifth in 2019.
Members of the Concrete Canoe Team included Benjamin Spratt of Dry Ridge; Dylan Ashby of Hanson; Dylan Elmore of Smiths Grove; Gregory Ryan of Monticello; Israel Anastasio Vasquez of Beaver Dam; Jacob Graham of Louisville; Jonathan Prince of Nicholasville; Josiah Youngers of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; Katie Erwin of Louisville; Keeley McKnight of Danville; Laken Moffitt of Wingo; Leah Bell of Monticello; Meaghan Czarnecki of Georgetown; Nathanael Hummel of Kansas City, Missouri; Sarah Holt of Springfield, Tennessee; Sheldon Goins of Bowling Green; and Tyaha Woodard of Nashville, Tennessee.
For the second year in a row, WKU engineering students qualified for the ASCE UESI Surveying Competition, placing 11th overall in the 2023 competition. Members of the Surveying Team included Emily Rodgers of Campbellsville; Evan Brittenham of Bowling Green; Keeley McKnight of Danville; Laken Moffitt of Wingo; and Robert Skipworth of Russellville.
