Preparing for a future in the legal field requires dedication, determination, and a strong academic foundation. For junior Kiara Pitts, her experiences through the Department of Political Science serve as a steppingstone towards achieving those dreams.
“I chose my major because I have dreams of being in the legal field and making a difference in the criminal justice system in every way that I can.”
This past summer, Kiara had the opportunity to participate in the Pre-Law Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, in Memphis, TN. From May to June 2023, Kiara immersed herself in an intensive program designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of law school and the intricacies of pursuing a legal career.
Recognizing the role played by the Political Science Department at WKU, Kiara attributes her preparedness for the PLUS Program and her future in law to the solid academic foundation provided by her professors.
“The Political Science Department helped me gain skills for this just by teaching me. Professor (Julie) Shadoan and Professor (Kelsey) Truxal gave me all the tools I needed to be able to be accepted in such a wonderful program that changed my life in so many ways.”
In addition to her academic pursuits, Kiara serves as a Political Science Ambassador. Through this role, she actively engages with the department and participates in various events.
“The best experience that I've had within the PoliSci Department is the house-warming party in Cherry. I was just amazed to see everyone come out and celebrate being in our new department home.”
When asked about her experience in the Department of Political Science, Kiara wholeheartedly recommends it to aspiring students.
“I would recommend PoliSci at WKU because us PoliSci Department majors make the world go round. We need more lawyers and politicians in this world to make change and that is what WKU is going to do”
