Stepping into the halls of the Department of Political Science you'll find more than just a standard academic program. Here, you'll discover a thriving community of engaged scholars, dedicated professors, and a wealth of opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. As an alumna of the department, Allison Feikes can attest to the invaluable experiences and lifelong lessons that await aspiring political scientists.
Feikes recalls, "WKU has outstanding professors, in that, they are concerned about your education rather than being rigorous. Their lessons are long-lasting."
One of the defining experiences of Allison's time at WKU was her participation in a course called "Constructing the Political Spectacle," taught by Professor Jeff Kash. It was in this class that she was first assigned "In Defense of Food," a book she cherishes and frequently discusses with others in Washington, D.C. The lasting impressions from these courses are evident in her later academic and professional endeavors. For instance, during her Master's program at Johns Hopkins SAIS, Allison referenced a documentary she saw in the late Professor Roger Murphy's course on Western Europe during a discussion on euroscepticism.
With a friendly word of advice to prospective students, Allison encourages them to read everything and to aim higher than just achieving good grades. "Remember that you are preparing for a career. Study like your boss is going to ask you for this information someday rather than your professor," she advises. Such an approach fosters a deep understanding of the subject matter, preparing students to excel in their future endeavors.
The impact of WKU's Political Science Department extends far beyond the classroom. Allison's success story is a testament to how the Department of Political Science effectively supports and prepares its students for the professional world. During her time at WKU, Professor Scott Lasley recommended Allison for an internship with Senator Mitch McConnell at his district office in Bowling Green. This internship laid the groundwork for her future career on Capitol Hill and played a pivotal role in landing her first position as a Legislative Correspondent. The knowledge gained from her courses at WKU, combined with real-world experience, enabled her to rise rapidly to the policy role of Legislative Assistant.
Considering these accomplishments, Allison wholeheartedly recommends the Department of Political Science to prospective students. She emphasizes, "Many are under the false impression that such a degree can only lead to a career as a lawyer or teacher. While both professions are fantastic options for those within the major, there are tons of other opportunities for those who choose this course of study”. The Department of Political Science opens doors to a diverse array of careers, from public service to policymaking, advocacy, and beyond.
The Department of Political Science provides guidance by exceptional professors, inspiration through captivating courses, and real-world experiences to pave your path to success after graduation.
