Gordon Ford College of Business was pleased to host William C. Carstanjen, the CEO of Churchill Downs, as part of the Hays Watkins Guest CEO Lecture Series.
Mr. Carstanjen shared insights from his career, which spans executive roles at the General Electric Company and several leadership positions within Churchill Downs Inc.
During the lecture, Carstanjen highlighted his leadership approach, emphasizing the importance of diversification and innovation. Under his guidance, Churchill Downs Inc. has seen significant investment and growth, including track renovations, expansion into online wagering technology, and brick-and-mortar casinos. Carstanjen emphasized the importance of a strategic approach to stay ahead in a rapidly evolving industry.
Additionally, Carstanjen discussed the economic impact of horse racing in Kentucky and how the billion-dollar industry touches a significant portion of the Commonwealth’s population.
Drawing from his experience in mergers and acquisitions, Carstanjen advised attendees to build a diverse skill set, have as many experiences as possible, and hire smart people. He also spoke candidly about the uncertainty inherent in decision-making and the importance of risk-taking in business.
Thank you to Mr. Carstanjen for taking the time to speak to our students. Also, thanks to WKU Alumni and GFCB Advisory Council Member Craig Browning, who was instrumental in Mr. Carstanjen’s visit.
