History will be made on Nov. 29 when WKU will get its first chapter of SALUTE, a national honor society for student veterans.

Seven charter members will be inducted into SALUTE at 5 p.m. in the Veterans Resource Center, 410 Tate Page Hall. The new initiates are WKU student veterans Brian G. Beshears, Derrick A. Huff, Teresa K. Jameson, Gerald W. Nichols, Wyatt M. Southerland, William J. Williford and LaTarrah Burton.
 
SALUTE is the only national honor society for veterans in the USA. It was founded at Colorado State University in 2009 and has over 200 chapters throughout the country. To qualify for membership, a student must be an active duty military member, guardsman, reservist or veteran with a minimum GPA of 3.0  for undergraduates or 3.5 for graduate students.
 
 “It is a great honor for WKU to have a prestigious group like SALUTE on our campus,” said Veterans Upward Bound Counselor Rick Wright. “It gives us another opportunity to recognize the best and brightest student veterans at WKU.”

WKU recognized for service to military students, veterans

WKU has been nationally recognized again for its service to military students, veterans and their families.

For the ninth consecutive year, WKU has been designated a Military Friendly® School by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs®, STEM Jobs^SM and Military Spouse.

And, for the eighth consecutive year, WKU is listed among Military Times Best: Colleges 2018 rankings, formerly known as Best for Vets.

In the fall 2017 semester, WKU is serving more than 2,500 military-affiliated students, according to Tonya Archey, director of Military Student Services. WKU’s Textbooks for Troops program, the largest scholarship program of its type in the nation, provided free book loans to 519 students in 2016-17 and to more than 2,100 students since 2011.

WKU’s award-winning ROTC program has 150 cadets in 2017-18. The Veterans Upward Bound, which celebrated its 25^th anniversary this year, assisted 69 students in enrolling at WKU and other postsecondary schools in 2017. The Office of Veterans Affairs at WKU processed educational benefits for approximately 700 veterans, dependents and active duty service members during the fall 2017 semester.
