Tracy Inman, Associate Director of The Center for Gifted Studies at WKU, was presented with the 2017 Legacy Award for the Outstanding Book for Parents in Gifted Education from The Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented at a ceremony Thursday (Nov. 30) in Houston, Texas, for her book Parenting Gifted Children 101: An Introduction to Gifted Kids and Their Needs. Inman co-authored the book with Jana Kirchner, Instructional Supervisor for Simpson County Schools in Franklin. It was published in 2016 by Prufrock Press.

The Legacy Book Awards celebrate outstanding books published in the United States that have long-term potential for positively influencing the lives of gifted children. The awards are given each year by the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented, the largest state advocacy group of its kind. The parent category recognizes a book that increases understanding of the unique needs of gifted and talented children and helps ensure that they are met both at home and in the classroom.

Parenting Gifted Children 101 explores the basics of parenting gifted children and is designed to give parents an “introductory course” in how to better understand and help their gifted child. Chapters cover such topics as parenting twice-exceptional students and navigating the possible challenges that school may hold for a gifted learner. It also contains resources for further reading and insights from more than 50 parents and educators of gifted children.

Inman has won two previous Legacy Awards. The first was the 2009 Legacy Award for the Outstanding Book for Educators in Gifted Education for Strategies for Differentiating Instruction: Best Practices for the Classroom, which she edited with Julia Roberts of The Center for Gifted Studies at WKU. The second was the 2011 Legacy Award for the Outstanding Book for Parents in Gifted Education for Parenting Gifted Children: The Authoritative Guide from the National Association for Gifted Children, which she co-edited with Jennifer L. Jolly, Donald J. Treffinger and Joan Franklin Smutny.
