Dr. Deborah Logan in the English Department has earned a Fulbright Award to help support her sabbatical work in the fall. She previously received a Fulbright in 2012.

Dr. Logan will be completing research for and a draft of The Women’s Press in India, 1860-1940: Imperial Imports and Nationalist Activism. She will examine how women writers in India developed their own voices in the context of Indian nationalist and independence movements. Additionally, she will collaborate with scholars in India to work towards digitization of periodicals by and for women writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Regarding her work, Dr. Logan says that “this new study deepens my exploration of previous questions and issues and anticipates a new book-length study extending the nexus of periodical publications, gender, and imperialism to the Indian nationalist and independence movements. This nexus is linked to nationalists’ concern with womanliness: how the term is defined according to tradition, how it requires redefining according to the spirit of the age, how a synthesis of East and West, ancient and modern can be yoked to the preservation, rejuvenation, and articulation of Indian identity.”

Dr. Logan is one of the most prolific scholars here at WKU, studying and editing work by Victorian writer Harriet Martineau. Dr. Logan has also published books on fallenness in Victorian women’s writing and The Indian Ladies’ Magazine; she has written numerous articles related to these topics and others in Victorian literature and culture.  Additionally, Dr. Logan is the editor of Victorians: A Journal of Culture and Literature, a 65-year-old scholarly journal sponsored by WKU and Ohio State.

English Department Head Dr. Rob Hale says, “I’m not surprised at all that Dr. Logan won her second Fulbright Scholarship.  She has been an amazingly productive scholar in the English Department. To earn one Fulbright in a career is impressive, but to earn two is truly exceptional. The English Department could not be happier about this well-deserved award.”
