The Mahurin Honors College at WKU and WBKO-TV hosted a reception on Nov. 27 to honor the 2018-2019 Scholar of the Week recipients.
The Scholar of the Week program recognizes young scholars in southcentral Kentucky and the WBKO viewing area for their academic and extracurricular activities. The Mahurin Honors College at WKU has been partnering with WBKO since 2010 on the Scholar of the Week Program.
Seventy-two high school juniors were chosen as Scholars of the Week for the 2018-2019 academic school year and have their name, high school and accomplishments air on segments on WBKO’s “10 PM News” on Tuesdays and “AM Kentucky” on Wednesdays. Each student is invited to a reception to celebrate their achievements, recognize them individually, and reward two Scholar of the Week students with a $1,000 scholarship for WKU.
This year’s two scholarship winners are Alexis Daniel and Reagan Fletcher, both juniors at Greenwood High School.
Fletcher has earned a 24 on her ACT and maintains a 4.0 GPA as a junior in high school. She plans to attend college and earn a nursing degree and then become a Nurse Anesthetist. She likes to spend her spare time doing community service, spending time outdoors, playing softball, and being with her family. Fletcher is a varsity starter for her school’s softball team as well as a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, FCA, FFA, Oar Club, and another travel softball team. She hopes to play softball in college while earning her degree.
In the near future, Daniel hopes to attend WKU and earn a degree in Economics with the intent of applying to law school. As a junior, she maintains a 4.0 GPA and earned a 27 on her ACT. Her extracurricular activities include National Honor Society, Beta Club, Pep Club and HOSA. Outside of school, she works at Chaney’s Dairy Barn and volunteers with the Dream Factory of Bowling Green.
Dr. Michael E. Smith, Acting Director of the Mahurin Honors College at WKU, believes the Scholar of the Week program provides a wonderful showcase of the quality of our local school systems and it reaffirms the mission of WKU and the Mahurin Honors College to propel our scholars to even greater academic and professional heights.
